One of her first cases involved going to court to defend a food manufacturer against a suit brought by a man who found part of a rat in a can of pork and beans. She was made partner in 1979. She served on the board of Wal-Mart from 1986 to 1992. She was the first woman to serve on the board, following demands from shareholders for more diversity.
